Newcastle United Snaps Up Three Academy Stars on Pro Deals
Newcastle United has handed professional contracts to three exciting youngsters: Ben Parkinson, Ciaran Thompson, and Shaun Mavididi. The trio’s rise showcases the strength of Newcastle’s famed Little Benton Academy.
Lifelong Fans Turn Pro
Both Parkinson and Thompson, Magpies supporters from the start, have secured full-time deals after progressing through the club’s youth ranks. London-born winger Shaun Mavididi also signed his first pro contract, adding firepower to Newcastle’s future line-up.
Parkinson’s Journey from Academy to First Contract
Parkinson joined the club at just seven years old. This 18-year-old striker, comfortable spraying crosses from the wing, had a standout 2022/23 season. He smashed five goals and two assists across 11 Under-18 Premier League games. The Durham-born skipper also struck three times during the FA Youth Cup, leading the Toon Teenagers before their fourth-round exit.
On top of that, Parkinson hit the net twice in his first three Premier League 2 appearances, proving he’s ready to compete with the under-21s. His consistent form earned him this crucial first contract after an 11-year journey with Newcastle.
“I’m absolutely over the moon to sign my first professional contract. It’s a huge moment, personally, but also for the people around me who have had to sacrifice their time and effort to help me get to this point. Doing it here at the club I grew up supporting makes it even more special,” said Parkinson.
Big Moments and Looking Ahead
Parkinson’s highlight reel includes a vital brace against Charlton in the FA Youth Cup that sealed a 3-2 win at The Valley. He also treasured scoring against Arsenal, especially in front of Newcastle’s passionate St. James’ Park crowd.
He also netted his first under-21 goal against Leeds, a tough fixture that tested him against bigger, stronger defenders. “Going into next season, understanding and knowing what to expect is a good thing,” Parkinson said. He’s fired up to embrace the challenges ahead and keep climbing Newcastle’s ranks.
Newcastle’s Investment in Tomorrow’s Stars
Newcastle United continues to back young talent like Parkinson, Thompson, and Mavididi. The club’s commitment to developing homegrown players is key to their bright future.
