A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake slammed central Philippines late Tuesday, leaving destruction in its path. Cebu Island suffered the worst, with at least 31 confirmed dead and fears the death toll could rise.
Desperate Rescue Mission Underway
Rescuers worked through the night and into Wednesday, sifting through rubble and collapsed buildings to find survivors. The quake struck at 9:59 pm local time near the northern town of Bogo, home to around 90,000 people.
USGS Warns of Shallow, Dangerous Tremor
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake was shallow, making it particularly devastating. Authorities are on high alert for aftershocks as emergency teams race to help those affected.
