TfL Drops Free New Year’s Eve Travel Amid Pandemic Fallout
Pay Up to Ride on NYE
Transport for London has confirmed there will be no free travel on New Year’s Eve for the second year running. The move comes as TfL battles ongoing financial fallout from the pandemic. While many Tube services will run all night, customers must pay fares to get around London on 31 December.
A TfL spokesperson said: “Given the impact of the pandemic on TfL’s finances, customers will have to pay to travel on New Year’s Eve, as was the case last year.
Plan Ahead – Expect Delays and Road Closures
Central London will see significant road closures from early afternoon to support the fireworks over the London Eye. Buses will be diverted, and several central London bridges will shut for much of the day.
- 2pm – Westminster Bridge closes to traffic
- 4pm – Waterloo Bridge closed to pedestrians
- 7pm – Waterloo Bridge closes to road traffic
- 8pm – Lambeth Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge close
- 11:30pm – Vauxhall Bridge closes
Other bridges might close without warning for public safety. TfL urges anyone needing to cross the river to use the Tube instead, which will keep running throughout the night.
Fireworks Show Sells Out Fast
The spectacular in-person fireworks over the London Eye sold out nearly a month ago. This is the first major public New Year’s Eve event since the pandemic began. London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced that over 100,000 ticket holders would gather to welcome 2024 in style.
TfL reminds Londoners not to attend the fireworks without a valid ticket.
