Rishi Sunak Unleashes Massive £330 Billion Lifeline to Save UK Businesses from Coronavirus Crisis
Rishi Sunak has today unveiled a colossal financial rescue package to shield British businesses and workers from the economic chaos sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. The Chancellor is pumping a staggering £330 billion—equivalent to 15% of the UK’s GDP—into loans and guarantees to keep cash flowing and firms afloat during this unprecedented emergency.
£330 Billion Bailout: Business Loans and Interest-Free Breaks
Building on last week’s £30 billion Budget boost, Sunak announced a fresh wave of support. Key highlights include:
- Unlimited loans and guarantees for firms struggling with cash flow
- Raising the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme cap from £1.2 million to £5 million
- Government covering the first 6 months of interest payments on these loans—no costs to businesses for half a year
- A Bank of England-backed scheme to help large firms navigate the cash crunch
- New legal powers to roll out further financial aid as needed under the Covid Bill
Business Rates Holiday and Massive Grants to Retail, Hospitality & Leisure
- 100% business rates holiday for retail, hospitality, and leisure firms in England for 12 months
- Small Business Rate Relief grants boosted from £3,000 to £10,000
- Additional £25,000 grants for retail and leisure businesses with premises valued between £15,000 and £51,000
Mortgage Payment Holidays and Insurance Claims Get the Green Light
Mortgage lenders have pledged support for anyone hit financially by Covid-19, offering up to three months’ payment holidays. This gives households breathing space without worrying about mortgage payments piling up.
Crucially, the government confirmed that warnings to avoid pubs, clubs, and theatres will allow businesses with pandemic insurance to claim business interruption payouts—putting money back into businesses forced to close.
Takeaways to the Rescue: Planning Rules Relaxed for Pubs and Restaurants
To keep food on tables and help those self-isolating, the Chancellor is easing planning laws so pubs and restaurants can start offering takeaway services without jumping through red tape.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect our people and businesses from the effects of this global economic emergency brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic,” said Sunak. “The interventions I am setting out today will help support businesses of all sizes – so they can continue operating during these unprecedented times.”
In addition, more than £3.5 billion in fresh funding will be channelled to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to back businesses across the UK during this national crisis.
