Firefighters Warn Over Deadly Electrical Danger After Kenley Blaze
House Fire Sparks Safety Alert
Firefighters were called to a house fire on Hayes Lane, Kenley, in the early hours of January 5. The blaze damaged part of the ground floor in a detached home. A woman was rescued from the property and treated on-site for smoke inhalation.
Extension Lead Sparks Suspected Fire
The cause? Experts say resistive heating from an overloaded extension lead likely sparked the flames. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned: “Overloaded sockets are one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Some electrical appliances use more power than others, so be mindful not to overload extension leads and always check that you’re using the right fuse for the plug.”
Rapid Response from Fire Brigade
The Brigade received the call at 00:43 and had the fire under control by 01:08. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Purley and Croydon fire stations raced to the scene, preventing further chaos.
