Blaze Breaks Out in New Cross Gate Flat – Smoking Materials to Blame

Four Fire Engines Rush to Billington Road Blaze

Yesterday afternoon, a fire tore through a two-room flat on Billington Road in New Cross Gate. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters sprang into action to tackle the flames.

Quick Escape, No Injuries Reported

The fire damaged the ground-floor flat in the converted terraced house, but thankfully, two residents got out before the London Fire Brigade arrived. No injuries were reported.

Smoking Negligence Sparks Dangerous Fire

The cause? Careless disposal of smoking materials. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned:

“We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you do, it’s absolutely critical you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.”

“If you don’t, you risk starting a fire that will not only destroy your property but will also cost you your life.”

Firefighters Respond Swiftly

The fire service was alerted at 2.46pm, with the blaze contained by 3.38pm. Crews from New Cross, Peckham, Greenwich, and Deptford all pitched in to douse the flames and secure the scene.
