Met Office Slaps UK with Yellow Snow and Ice Warnings
The Met Office has issued Yellow National Severe Weather Warnings for snow and ice, with northern Scotland and Northern Ireland set to bear the brunt. Brace yourselves – the cold snap kicks off Sunday as arctic air sweeps in from the north.
Snow Hits Northern Scotland and Northern Ireland
From Sunday, northern Scotland faces up to 10cm of snow, with strong winds bringing drifting snow likely. Northern Ireland joins the freeze on Monday, where showers start as snow over high ground but will spread to lower levels by the afternoon. Expect up to 5cm on higher routes and some snow settling down low.
More Snow to Spread Across UK Midweek
Cold air will linger into next week, bumping up snow chances across large swathes of the UK. Tuesday could see snow pushing inland across parts of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, and northern England. Southern England also risks snowfall, making it a nationwide chills fest.
“Snow showers from Sunday onwards are most likely to move inland from coasts exposed to northerly winds,” said Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer. “Northern Scotland will be the main hotspot, but coastal areas near the North Sea and Irish Sea may get some snow, too.”
Health and Travel Warnings: Stay Safe in the Freeze
The UK Health Security Agency has launched a Cold-Health Alert, warning that the icy snap poses serious risks, especially for the over-65s and those with existing health issues. Dr. Agostinho Sousa urged everyone to check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours to ensure they’re prepared.
Travel could get tricky as snow and ice hit roads. Amy Fellows from National Highways advised drivers to follow the TRIP checklist: Top-up fluids, Rest every two hours, Inspect tyres and lights, and Prepare by checking routes and weather forecasts.
The UK is bracing for wintry chaos. Stay alert, layer up, and plan ahead to weather this cold blast.
