£3 Million Boost for Military Veterans’ ID Cards to Speed Up Support
Thousands of UK veterans who left the armed forces before 2018 are set to gain better access to vital services thanks to a fresh £3 million fund. The cash injection will expand the rollout of HM Armed Forces Veteran Cards, giving vets a quick and easy way to prove their service and unlock benefits.
Fast-Track Access to NHS, Discounts, and More
The Veteran Cards simplify access to NHS care, local authority help, and numerous charities. They also qualify veterans for perks like the Defence Discount Service and the Veterans Railcard. This means smoother, quicker support for those who served.
Veterans’ Minister Sees Progress in Gosport
Veterans’ Minister Johnny Mercer visited a Gosport centre to see the card distribution firsthand. He met vets who have already benefitted from the scheme and praised its positive impact.
Helping Those Who Served Before 2018
The initiative began in December 2018, automatically issuing cards to all veterans leaving service after that date. Now, production will ramp up to 50,000 cards a month to cover those who left before 2018 — a huge expansion.
Charity Chiefs Back the Cards
Lt Gen Sir Nicholas Pope, Chair of Cobseo (the Confederation of Service Charities), said: “Veterans who need timely help, either from the state or from the charity sector, are often frustrated by delays in confirming their status. Veterans’ ID cards provide a significant step forward in speeding up this process and we look forward to kent-police-community-support-officer-has-been-hailed-as-a-hero-for-his-work-with-veterans-in-thanet-and-throughout-the-county/">supporting their delivery to the entire veteran community.”
