Nearly 1 Million Dartford Crossing Drivers Face Fines Over Account Chaos
Close to one million motorists risk fines after failing to update their Dart Charge accounts, sparking panic among Dartford Crossing users worried about dodgy account management.
Service Switch Sparks Account Update Fiasco
In July 2023, National Highways switched service providers for the Dart Charge toll system on the QEII bridge. Drivers were told to update their account details immediately. But out of 1.7 million account holders, only about 770,000 complied. That leaves hundreds of thousands exposed to penalties for non-payment.
Automatic Payments Failed, Drivers Hit With Unexpected Fines
Most users rely on automatic payments to cover the £2.50 crossing fee. Yet many have been slapped with fines after their accounts were shut down without warning. Some even had bailiffs knocking on their doors over missed payments they believed were sorted automatically.
National Highways Blames Inactivity, Promises Multiple Warnings
National Highways insists all users were contacted ahead about the update. Their spokesperson said accounts with invalid or inactive payment details were closed after multiple reminders. But infrequent users remain frustrated, demanding better communication to avoid unnecessary fines.
4.5 Million Crossings Monthly – System Must Improve
With 4.5 million crossings each month between Essex and Kent, the stakes are high. The Dart Charge system must run smoothly to keep thousands of daily commuters moving – and off the hook from unfair penalties.
