Isle of Wight plunged into darkness after early morning power cut

Thousands of homes on the Isle of Wight were left without electricity in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a fault hit a high voltage power cable. The blackout plunged entire communities into darkness, with street lights and traffic signals also knocked out.

Major Outage Hits Across the Island

The power cut has affected a huge swathe of the Isle of Wight, including Brighstone, Mottistone, Calbourne, Shalfleet, Arreton, Brook, Shorwell, Chillerton, Merstone, Porchfield, Kingston, Hulverstone, Yafford, Limerstone, Downend, Horringford, Newport, Five Houses, Barton, Billingham, Newtown, Rowridge, Ningwood, Gatcombe, Bowcombe, Sandy Way, Locksgreen, Blackwater, Seaview, Nettlestone, Shanklin, Ventnor, Ninham, Wroxall and Luccombe.

Postcodes in the PO30, PO33, PO34, and PO37 areas were particularly affected, leaving thousands in the dark and causing disruption to daily life.

Power Cut Hits Just After 4 AM

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) confirmed the outage began just after 4 am. Engineers were immediately dispatched to the scene and are working round the clock to fix the issue. SSE warned that power restoration isn’t expected until at least 6 am.

Residents are urged to reset their trip switches if safe to do so and to call SSE on 0800 072 7282 or the free number 105 for updates or assistance.

SSE Appeals for Patience

“There is a power cut in this area. Our engineers are working hard to restore your electricity and it should be restored by 6 am,” SSE said in a statement.

“If you are without power or experiencing problems with your electricity supply, please try resetting your trip switches or contact us on 105 for help. Thanks for your patience and understanding.”
