Power Failure Sparks Chaos: London to Paris Eurostar Trains Cancelled, Thousands Stranded
Eurostar Services Hit Hard by French Power Outage
Thousands of Eurostar passengers have been left stranded after a major power failure in northern France forced the cancellation of nine trains and gave 12 others hefty delays.
The blackout struck the high-speed line between Moussy and Longueil at around 8:30am local time, causing chaos on the busy London to Paris route. Trains are now being rerouted onto slower conventional tracks, sending journey times soaring.
Travel disruption is expected to drag on throughout the entire day, with Eurostar scrambling to manage the fallout.
Eurostar Urges Travellers to Postpone Trips
Eurostar has advised passengers to postpone journeys where possible. Spokesperson said:
“We advise passengers on these routes to postpone their journey if possible. They can exchange their ticket free of charge or request a full refund.”
Additional staff have been deployed at key stations including London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord to help cope with growing queues and confusion.
Wider Ripple Effect Across Europe
The disruption isn’t limited to London-Paris services. Eurostar routes between Amsterdam and Brussels have also been impacted. However, travellers on London-Amsterdam, Brussels-London, Brussels-Amsterdam, and Brussels-Cologne routes remain unaffected.
The breakdown is the worst timing, hitting during August – one of the busiest months for cross-Channel travel when Brits flock abroad for summer holidays.
What You Need to Do
- Check Eurostar’s website or app regularly for real-time updates.
- Take advantage of free ticket exchanges and full refunds being offered on affected journeys.
- Allow extra travel time at stations and be prepared for extended delays.
Eurostar Working Flat Out to Fix the Problem
Eurostar apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience. A spokesperson added:
“We continue to do everything possible to assist our passengers to the best of our ability.”
French infrastructure teams are on the job trying to restore power and get the trains back on track, but no estimate has been given for when full service will resume.
