Cowes Lifeboat Exercise Turns Dramatic Rescue at Bramble Bank

Cowes lifeboat was out on a routine towing drill yesterday evening – but it quickly sparked into a real rescue at 7:45pm.

Two Yachts Run Aground at Bramble Bank

Two racing yachts from Cowes got stuck on the notorious Bramble Bank, right in the middle between the Isle of Wight and Hampshire. When the lifeboat arrived, one yacht managed to free itself, but the second was firmly stuck in the sand.

Team Effort Hauls Yacht to Safety

With quick thinking, the yacht’s crew leaned the vessel, helping the lifeboat team pull it off the sandbank. The stranded yacht was then towed in alongside back to Cowes harbour.

End of the Day and On to the Next

The helmsman, called out for a quick tea break, was soon back at the station. What started as an exercise turned into a long night for the crew – but another successful rescue was added to their record.
