Chilling Dudley Murder Shakes Community
Nathan Maynard-Ellis and his partner David Leesley have been found guilty of a brutal crime that left Dudley reeling. Julia Rawson, 42, vanished after a night out at the Bottle and Cork pub on 11 May. Loved ones never saw her again.
Missing Woman Last Seen Leaving Pub
Julia spent the day with friends before heading to the pub that evening. Concern grew when she failed to attend work and family couldn’t contact her. She was reported missing on 14 May. CCTV showed Julia leaving in a taxi with a man around 2am on Sunday morning — a chance encounter that sparked a vital police lead.
A local security guard spotted the man in the footage and tipped off police. Officers stopped Maynard-Ellis on 22 May and pressed him about Julia. He denied knowing her, despite the evidence showing distinctive tattoos he had revealed to Julia.
Horrifying Evidence Found at Couple’s Flat
Arrested on suspicion of kidnap, Maynard-Ellis and Leesley came under intense police scrutiny. Detectives searched their Mission Drive flat near a canal and wooded area. They caught the pair carrying carrier bags near the canal on CCTV and discovered they’d recently bought new carpet. Beneath the carpet, forensic experts found blood — DNA confirmed it was Julia’s.
Both men were charged with murder despite Julia’s body still missing. The police search ramped up, lasting 47 days with specialist teams brought in from across the country.
Grim Discovery and Justice Served
On 12 June, a search dog led officers to two plastic-wrapped bags containing Julia’s dismembered body parts, 20 metres apart by the canal. Forensics confirmed the remains were hers.
After a four-week trial at Dudley Crown Court, Maynard-Ellis, 30, and Leesley, 25, were found guilty of Julia’s murder. Maynard-Ellis was also convicted of rape and threats to kill another woman. Sentencing is pending.
Family and Police React to Tragic Loss
Julia’s family described her as “easy-going and quick to make friends.” A talented artist and musician, her works featured in local shows. They said the mutilation and callous disposal of her body was horrific. “We pray Julia knew nothing of these abhorrent acts,” they said. “Her loss continues to hit us hard every day.”
Detective Inspector Jim Colclough said: “This is a tragic case. Julia did nothing wrong that night. The murder and treatment of her body are sickening. The community and her family remain devastated. Such depraved crimes are thankfully rare, but their actions were hateful. We sought justice for Julia and hope this verdict brings some solace to her loved ones.”
