Uber driver guilty of rape gets 12 years behind bars
Muhammad Khurram Durrani, 38, from Streatham, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a passenger. The Southwark Crown Court handed down the sentence on Thursday, 10 May, alongside an eight-year term for sexual assault. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Shocking attack after a night out
The court heard the attack happened on 23 July 2016. A 27-year-old woman booked an Uber to get home safely after an evening in south London. When she reached her front door, the driver grabbed her from behind, dragged her to the back of his car, and then raped and sexually assaulted her.
Justice served – but the nightmare continues
Durrani was arrested two days later and charged with rape. Detective Constable Peter Monaghan, from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said:
“This woman booked the cab in good faith to safely take her home. Durrani, realising her vulnerability, abused her trust and raped her. This assault has had a significant impact on her life. I thank her for the courage to come forward and give evidence.”
Police urge other victims to speak up
Durrani will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and face a restraining order and sexual harm protection order. He is also set for deportation once his sentence is served.
Detectives are calling on anyone who may have been assaulted by Durrani to come forward. Contact the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command team on 101.
