Wales Bags Two New Freeports in Big Boost for Jobs and Green Growth

The UK and Welsh governments have jointly confirmed a major win for Wales: two brand-new Freeports have been officially approved. Anglesey Freeport and the Celtic Freeport in Port Talbot and Milford Haven have triumphed in their bids, promising to turbocharge the Welsh economy.

PM Sunak and Welsh First Minister Celebrate Freeport Success

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford made the big announcement together, underlining their commitment to powering up Wales’ economic future. “Everyone deserves equality of opportunity,” said Sunak, praising the close collaboration between the two governments.

Mark Drakeford added: “These Freeports will transform the Welsh economy, building on years of investment and partnerships. Our joint approach sets a great example for tackling future challenges together.”

Massive Jobs and Green Tech Promise from Celtic Freeport

  • The Celtic Freeport aims to attract a staggering £3.5 billion investment in hydrogen technology.
  • It plans to create 16,000 new jobs and generate £900 million in economic value by 2030.
  • Focus areas include floating offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture, biofuels, and other low-carbon tech.
  • Infrastructure upgrades include redeveloping port land, restoring rail links and expanding quayside space.

Wales’ Economy Minister Vaughan Gething praised the stellar bids. “I’m thrilled to back a second Freeport in Wales. Our ports are key to industrial renewal and a green future,” he said.

Levelling Up and Prosperity Across Wales

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove hailed the decision as a game changer. “Wales has huge untapped potential. Two Freeports show what working together can achieve to boost jobs, investment and opportunity.”

Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies called it “fantastic news” and highlighted the UK Government’s ongoing support for Freeports. He said: “This move will drive fresh investment and prosperity right across Wales.”

What’s Next for Welsh Freeports?

The rigorous selection process ensured the chosen sites can regenerate communities, become global trade hubs, and foster innovation. Both governments will work closely with Freeports to make sure they deliver fast and furiously.

This latest win builds on successes seen across the UK, including eight Freeports in England and new green Freeports in Scotland. Additionally, plans are underway to create at least one Investment Zone in Wales to complement the Freeport programme and turbocharge local economies.

Even the unsuccessful bidders are set for support, with plans to help them drive jobs and growth outside the Freeports scheme.
