Areas like Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Pennines face the brunt, following 6 inches (15 cm) dumped on Aberdeenshire yesterday. In North West Scotland, snowfall could top a staggering 1ft 4 inches (40 cm) by week’s end.

Over 100 schools have already closed amid the deep freeze, with liverpool/" title="Liverpool" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Liverpool among the worst hit — 36 schools shuttered and bin collections halted as workers rush to clear snowy footpaths.

This morning saw mercury dip to -9°C (16°F), with particular lows recorded as follows:

  • -8.6°F (-16.5°C) on Aonach Mòr, Scotland
  • -8°C (17.6°F) in Oxfordshire, Dorset, Hampshire
  • -6.2°C (20.8°F) in Northolt, West London
  • -6°C (21°F) at Gatwick and Exeter airports

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: “In the early hours of the morning we’re looking at temperatures getting down to -12°C in a few spots, Tuesday night possibly down to -15°C. So certainly a very cold spell into the week.”

Warmer air won’t arrive until February 1 — but beware, it will bring wet and windy weather that could spark more travel headaches as the snow melts.
