The UK government’s Emergency Alerts system warns you of immediate dangers nearby. Your mobile or tablet will blast you a safety alert when lives could be at risk.
What Triggers an Emergency Alert?
- Severe flooding
- Fires
- Extreme weather
- Public health emergencies
Only emergency services and authorised government bodies can send these alerts.
How the Alerts Work
Your phone or tablet will:
- Sound a loud siren, even on silent
- Vibrate
- Read the alert out loud
The noise and vibration last about 10 seconds. Each alert includes a phone number or a link to GOV.UK for more info.
You’ll get alerts based on where you are right now – not where you live or work. No need to switch on location services.
What You Should Do
Stop what you’re doing and follow the instructions in the alert immediately.
If you’re driving or on a bike, pull over safely before checking the alert. Hands-free use is enforced by law.
What If You Can’t Receive Alerts?
If your device isn’t compatible, don’t panic. Emergency services have other ways to warn you about life-threatening situations.
Remember, these alerts complement local news, radio, TV, and social media — they won’t replace them.
Accessibility and Language
For those deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted, alerts include audio and vibration signals.
Alerts come in English and may also be sent in Welsh when you’re in Wales.
