M1 Abrams Tanks to Boost Ukraine’s Counter-Offensive Against Russia

Ukraine is about to get a serious firepower upgrade. The US is sending M1 Abrams tanks to support Kyiv’s grinding counter-offensive against Russian forces. The announcement came from US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin at the Ukraine Defence Contact Group summit in Germany.

Over $43 Billion in US Aid Pours In Since Russia’s Invasion

This latest move fulfills Washington’s earlier pledge to equip Ukraine with the fearsome M1 Abrams tanks. The US has committed more than $43 billion in military aid since Russia invaded Ukraine back in February 2022.

“I’m… pleased to announce that the M1 Abrams tanks that the United States had previously committed to will be entering Ukraine soon,” said Austin.

The tanks will roll in armed with potent 120mm armour-piercing depleted uranium rounds—a lethal ammo announced earlier this month.

Controversy Swirls Around Depleted Uranium Ammo

The use of depleted uranium shells is controversial. Critics link them to health risks such as cancer and birth defects in conflict zones, though no firm scientific proof confirms these claims. Still, the ammo packs a powerful punch against Russian armour.

Steady Progress Amid Challenges

Since June, Ukraine has been chipping away at tough Russian defences in a slow but determined counter-offensive. Austin praised Ukrainian troops for their courage in breaking through heavily fortified lines.

New Defence Boss Signals Fresh Start

The conference also spotlighted Ukraine’s new defence minister, Rustem Umerov, appointed after a series of corruption scandals rocked the ministry. US officials expressed cautious optimism, eager to see Umerov’s plans to strengthen Ukraine’s defence.

Global Backing Keeps Ukraine Fighting

The US is leading an international band of supporters rallying behind Ukraine. Alongside hefty military aid, Washington coordinates troop training and drives strict sanctions targeting Russia’s financial system, tech imports, and energy exports.
