Arson Attack Shocker: Two Ukrainians Deny Plot to Torch Keir Starmer’s Homes

Trio Accused Over String of Fires Targeting Starmer

Two Ukrainian men have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges over a spate of arson attacks linked to properties connected to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Petro Pochynok, 35, appeared at the Old Bailey via video-link from Belmarsh prison. They face serious allegations tied to three fires in north London last May.

Three Fiery Incidents in Tight Timeline

  • On 8 May, a Toyota RAV4 once owned by Sir Keir was set ablaze in Kentish Town.
  • On 11 May, the front door of a flat in Islington linked to Starmer was torched.
  • On 12 May, a former home of Starmer’s in Kentish Town suffered a dangerous arson attack.

The attacks occurred just as Starmer was stepping up to become prime minister, sparking fears about the safety of top politicians.

Denied and Detained: Serious Charges Loom

Both Ukrainians deny conspiring to commit arson with intent to endanger life between 1 April and 13 May. Prosecutors say they acted “together with others,” suggesting more suspects could be involved. Romanian co-defendant Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, faces charges but has yet to plead.

Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb ordered all three remanded in custody ahead of their next court date on 28 November. Their trial is pencilled in for 27 April 2026 at the Old Bailey. The trio remain locked up in Belmarsh, London’s high-security prison reserved for terrorism and national security cases.

Political Security and International Tensions Rise

The case has ratcheted up concerns about threats to political figures amid Britain’s fractious political climate. Starmer lived at the Kentish Town address during the alleged planning or surveillance stages.

Authorities are investigating whether the suspects have foreign or extremist links, though no public evidence has surfaced yet. The involvement of Ukrainian and Romanian nationals adds an international angle. With Ukraine a vital UK ally in the conflict against Russia, questions over motive and possible overseas involvement remain rife.

Met Police Crack Down on High-Stakes Arson Plot

The Metropolitan Police launched a major operation, deploying specialist units focused on protecting prominent figures and counter-terrorism. Quick arrests suggest strong evidence, but it will be tested thoroughly at trial.

The attacks have sent shockwaves through security circles, highlighting vulnerabilities even for high-profile politicians.
