ULEZ Expansion Set to Hit London Drivers with £12.50 Daily Charge
London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is about to get a lot bigger, covering all of Greater London. From soon, most drivers will have to cough up £12.50 a day if their vehicles don’t meet strict emission standards. The move, championed by Mayor Sadiq Khan, aims to slash pollution and boost health across the capital.
Who’s Exempt? Key ULEZ Discounts and Grace Periods
Not everyone will have to pay. Transport for London (TfL) has revealed several exemptions and discounts designed to ease the burden on vulnerable groups and certain businesses.
- Disabled Drivers: Blue badge holders get a grace period until October 24, 2027, avoiding charges. Those without disabled vehicle tax status can apply for the same period via TfL.
- Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles: Owners with vehicles featuring permanent ramps or powered lifts can claim a grace period until October 25, 2027.
- Disability Benefits Recipients: Those receiving PIP, Disability Living Allowance, Child Disability Payment, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, Armed Forces Independence Payment, or Adult Disability Payment, plus parents of medically young kids, get a break.
- NHS Patients: If too ill to travel by public transport for appointments, patients can claim ULEZ charges back from hospitals.
- London Taxis: Licensed cabs are fully exempt but must be under 12 years old.
Business and Charity Relief on Offer
Small firms, charities, and sole traders in London’s 32 boroughs and the City can access short-term grace periods if they’ve ordered new low-emission vans or booked retrofitting for existing vehicles. Not-for-profit groups running minibuses enjoy a 100% discount until October 26, 2025.
Classic Cars Also Get a Pass
Motoring nostalgics, rejoice! Classic cars over 40 years old that fall under the historic vehicle tax class are exempt from ULEZ charges, preserving their place on London’s roads.
Check Before You Drive!
The new ULEZ rules are complex. Drivers must check if they qualify for exemptions or discounts to dodge fines. Staying informed will not only save money but also help clear London’s air for everyone.
