London ULEZ Scrappage Scheme Goes Global with Ukraine Donations

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scrappage scheme just got a humanitarian twist. From March 15, non-compliant vehicles can be donated to support vital aid efforts in Ukraine.

Scrap Your Old Ride and Help Save Lives

Instead of scrapping your old, polluting vehicle, you can now donate it for use in Ukraine’s humanitarian and medical missions. In return, you get the usual ULEZ scrappage grant payment – a win-win for Londoners and those in need abroad.

The scheme is open to all London residents, small businesses, and charities with vehicles failing to meet ULEZ emissions standards. These vehicles are otherwise banned from the ULEZ but are urgently required in Ukraine.

Backing from the Top: Khan, Kyiv, and UK Authorities

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I am delighted to launch the expanded ULEZ scrappage scheme today, enabling people to donate their non-ULEZ compliant vehicles to Ukraine where they can make a real difference.”

The idea came from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who proposed the scheme directly to Khan. UK authorities, including Transport Secretary Mark Harper, confirmed no legal obstacles stand in the way of these donations.

Charity and Emergency Services Join Forces

British-Ukrainian Aid (BUA), a UK-registered charity, will assess and coordinate the donated vehicles to match urgent needs in Ukraine. BUA trustee Dr. Rainer-Elk Anders thanked Londoners for their generosity, highlighting the huge impact these vehicles will have on frontline humanitarian efforts.

Meanwhile, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) pledged to donate 50 decommissioned ambulances, stepping up even though they are currently exempt from ULEZ charges.

How to Get Involved

  • Donate your ULEZ non-compliant vehicle and receive the standard scrappage grant.
  • Vehicles will be permanently removed from the UK, with proof provided by BUA.
  • Apply via the TfL website.

Transport Strategy Director Christina Calderato said: “We are very pleased that applicants can now donate their vehicles to Ukraine while still receiving a scrappage grant.”

Several Londoners have already signed up to donate, with many more expected to follow as word spreads. It’s a great way to clear the roads and lend a helping hand to those battling crises thousands of miles away.
