Ministers Slammed Over Harsh ‘Tagging’ Plan for Asylum Seekers
Government’s Tough New Approach Sparks Outrage
Campaigners and experts have blasted ministers for launching a brutal crackdown on asylum seekers. The government’s plan to tag people arriving in the UK via dangerous routes has been slammed as draconian and punitive. Critics warn this move will criminalise vulnerable people fleeing conflict and danger.
12-Month Pilot to Tag Asylum Seekers
According to new Home Office guidance, a 12-month pilot will fit electronic tags on some asylum seekers who travel by unnecessary and risky routes. This could include individuals recognised as victims of torture and trafficking. If tagged people break their conditions, they face harsh consequences like detention, removal, or even prosecution.
Controversy After Rwanda Flight Cancelled
The announcement comes after the government faced fierce criticism over the failed Rwanda deportation plan. A flight carrying 130 asylum seekers was cancelled at the last minute following intervention by European judges citing human rights concerns. Some of these detainees could be among the first to wear electronic tags if released.
Experts Decry ‘Appalling’ Treatment of Refugees
Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council, said: “It is appalling that this government is determined to treat men, women, and children who have fled war, bloodshed, and persecution as criminals.”
“This draconian and punitive approach not only shows no compassion for the most vulnerable people, but it also does nothing to deter those desperate for safety in the UK.”
