Undercover cops slam brakes on dangerous drivers after cyclist’s death

Wiltshire police have taken to the roads on camera-packed bikes to nab drivers who squeeze past cyclists too closely – and it comes after a fatal crash on the same street. Yesterday’s sting saw officers pull over motorists on Hilperton Road, Trowbridge, reminding them to share the road safely as part of Operation Close Pass.

Close Pass crackdown targets risky drivers

Originally launched by West Midlands Police, the Close Pass campaign is nationwide and focuses on drivers who don’t leave enough room when overtaking cyclists. This time, a high-tech pedal cycle loaded with front and rear cameras was ridden along the stretch where a cyclist tragically died months ago.

Any driver caught passing too close was stopped by uniformed officers and given a firm safety lesson. Alongside educating motorists, officers checked vehicle conditions, driver eyesight, insurance, and legality.

Team effort: police and emergency services join forces

The operation involved the Tri-Force Roads Policing Unit, Road Safety Unit, Special Constabulary, and key members from the swindon/" title="Swindon" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Swindon and Wiltshire Road Safety Partnership. This team includes Dorset and Wiltshire Fire, Wiltshire Council, and paramedics from Wiltshire Air Ambulance – all delivering crucial safety advice on the spot.

Cycling UK chipped in with specialist equipment. In total, 38 drivers were stopped, mostly for Close Pass offences. The haul included three Fixed Penalty Notices for number plate and seat belt issues, plus two drivers reported for no insurance. Vehicle checks sparked several warnings on roadworthiness.

Sergeant warns: Give cyclists space or face consequences

“We must educate drivers to share the road safely,” said Sergeant Simon Drewett. “Tragically, two cyclists have already died on Wiltshire roads this year, with many more seriously injured. Motorists simply aren’t giving vulnerable riders enough space or time.”

“At 30mph, drivers must keep at least 1.5 metres away when overtaking. The faster you go, the more space you need. Operation Close Pass helps drivers judge this by showing the exact safe passing distances.”

“Our message is clear: be considerate, understand safe spacing, and make roads safer for everyone.”
