Explosion Rocks West Oxford: Emergency Services Scramble to Scene
Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, Thames Valley Police, and South Central Ambulance Service are still battling the aftermath of a violent explosion and fire that led to a property collapse in West Oxford yesterday.
Blast Rocks Osney Lane and Gibbs Crescent
The chaos began around 4.45pm when emergency crews were called to reports of an explosion and fire in the Osney Lane and Gibbs Crescent area. The blast caused a building to collapse, sparking a major response from firefighters, police, and paramedics.
Two people suffered minor injuries and received on-site treatment, while one victim was rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital for further care. The hazardous atmosphere forced a large-scale evacuation, with evacuees receiving support from local councils and housing associations.
Hazmat Teams and Rescue Specialists Lead Operation
The South Central Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team are on the ground, tackling dangerous conditions head-on. Around 25 firefighters remain on scene, conducting safety checks, risk assessments, and a systematic search with Thames Valley Police. Urban Search & Rescue teams from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue have also joined the operation.
Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council, alongside housing group A2Dominion, are helping evacuated residents find shelter. The Red Cross is stepping in to secure emergency accommodation for those displaced.
One Still Missing, Full Investigation Underway
Kerry Blair, Incident Commander for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue, said: “Firefighters remain at Osney Mead, working tirelessly to secure the site and allow some residents to return safely in phases.”
Supt Joe Kidman of Thames Valley Police added: “One person remains unaccounted for, and we are supporting their family at this difficult time. This is a major incident that will impact the community, but our multi-agency response aims to minimise disruption and support those affected.”
“It is too early to determine the cause of the explosion and fire, but a thorough investigation will be carried out.”
Emergency teams are expected to stay in the area for several days as they work to restore safety and piece together what caused the devastating blast.
