Brace yourselves! A soggy Friday is hitting much of the UK with heavy rain and strong winds set to batter large swathes, especially Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Flood alerts and heavy downpours
The Met Office has slapped an amber rain warning on southwest Scotland for Friday morning. Expect widespread rainfall totals of 50mm, with some upland areas bracing for a whopping 70mm-plus. Across central and southwest Scotland, rain could tip 60mm, while Northern Ireland faces up to 40mm in spots.
Snow and gales on the way
Up north, the high ground looks set for a wintry blast. Snow could pile up to 10cm over the Grampians and other 200m-plus peaks.
It won’t just be wet—winds will roar along coasts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, gusting near 60mph. Those living along these shores should batten down the hatches.
Jet stream fuels stormy conditions
The culprit: a powerful jet stream pushing the storms across Britain. Although chilly weather in North America isn’t directly affecting us, the Atlantic temperature clash is boosting the jet stream, funneling low-pressure systems our way.
The soggy saga continues into the New Year weekend. Saturday promises the heaviest, most stubborn rain yet.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Helen Caughey warned: “It’ll be an unsettled New Year weekend for much of the UK, with frequent and at times heavy rain, and a chance this could turn to snow mainly across high ground in Scotland… New Year’s Eve will be the wetter of the two days… with some very strong winds along the English Channel.”
Looking ahead: mixed fortunes next week
Next week shows a split pattern: high pressure clinging to the south will bring calmer weather, while the north faces low pressure, stronger winds, showers, and more rain. The exact line between wet and dry remains a puzzle — so keep an eye on updates.
Stay tuned and stay dry, UK – the weather rollercoaster isn’t over yet!
