Crematoriums Launch ‘Letters to Heaven’ Post Boxes Nationwide
Following smashing success at Gedling Crematorium, the popular ‘Letters to Heaven’ post box is set to roll out across all Westerleigh Group sites. Over 100 heartfelt letters and cards flooded the first post box within weeks, proving just how much comfort people find in writing to lost loved ones.
A Child’s Inspiring Idea Sparks Nationwide Comfort
The idea came from nine-year-old Matilda, daughter of Gedling Crematorium’s Memorial Advisor Leanne Handy. After losing her grandparents, Matilda wished she could send them birthday and Christmas cards. Leanne explained, “She was four when my mum died and never met my dad. Matilda always wanted to send cards for them to read.”
Matilda’s simple wish has now grown into a national initiative helping thousands feel connected to those who’ve passed.
Westerleigh Group Brings Emotional Support to 37 Sites
Waseley Hills and Gedling are part of the UK’s largest independent crematoria operator, Westerleigh Group, with 37 serene sites across England, Scotland, and Wales. Joy Edgington, Waseley Hills Site Manager, said: “Seeing the positive impact at Gedling, we’re proud to bring the post box here too. Writing letters or birthday cards to lost loved ones offers real therapeutic comfort.”
Joy added: “No stamps or addresses required. It’s just another way to support grieving families and honour memories.”
Open to Everyone, No Matter the Connection
Leanne Handy emphasised that the memorial post boxes are open to all, “Whether or not you’ve held a service with us, anyone can write a message to someone who’s no longer here.”
With the ‘Letters to Heaven’ post boxes now launching countrywide, grieving families have a fresh, heartfelt way to reach out and remember.
