Iran Seizes Second Tanker in a Week, Sparks Tensions in Gulf
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has grabbed a second oil tanker in just seven days, ramping up tension in the Gulf of Oman. The latest victim: the Panama-flagged tanker Niovi, forced to U-turn into Iranian waters. Both the US Fifth Fleet and Iranian media confirmed the seizure on Wednesday, but Tehran’s official news agency IRNA stayed tight-lipped on details.
Previous Seizure Sparked Fury: Turkish-Owned Tanker Taken
Only days earlier, Iran’s navy snatched another tanker, the Advantage Sweet, Turkish-operated and Chinese-owned. The US slammed the move as illegal and a “threat to maritime security and global economy.” Tehran claimed the Advantage Sweet hit an Iranian vessel and then fled despite warnings—an excuse dismissed by many in the West.
US and Iran at Each Other’s Throats Over Oil Sanctions
Western outlets say both Iranian seizures are payback for the US confiscating an Iranian oil tanker, enforcing strict unilateral sanctions. This tit-for-tat has been flaring for years. Last year, for example, a US attempt to seize Iranian oil near Greece triggered Iran to detain two Greek tankers for months.
Since dumping the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018, the US has piled on its toughest sanctions against Tehran, fueling this maritime standoff. Meanwhile, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has just wrapped a two-day visit to Damascus, meeting Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to cement their alliance.
Tehran Calls It a ‘Strategic Victory’ Amid US Chaos
Iran hails these seizures as a “strategic victory” against American political failures. But the wider world is desperate for peace, hoping both sides step back from the brink and sort their issues diplomatically before things get worse.
