Over 11,600 Children Risk Lives Crossing Mediterranean in 2023

More than 11,600 unaccompanied children have braved the dangerous Central Mediterranean route to Italy in 2023 alone. That’s a shocking 60% rise compared to last year, exposing a growing crisis for vulnerable young migrants.

Lampedusa Flooded with Refugees

The tiny Italian island of Lampedusa is feeling the pressure as a key entry point for asylum seekers. In a single day this month, it saw an eye-watering 4,800 arrivals — many children fleeing war, poverty, and violence.

These kids often pack into flimsy dinghies, rickety fishing boats, or even iron barges. Overcrowding and poor safety increase the risks, with many left at the mercy of the sea. A lack of coordinated rescue efforts and disembarkation cooperation only worsens their plight.

Deadly Journey Leaves Hundreds Missing

Between June and August, nearly 1,000 lives were lost or vanished trying the Central Mediterranean route — triple the fatalities from last summer. Many shipwrecks leave no survivors, and the true death toll is likely far higher.

Unaccompanied children who survive face further hardship. Thousands are held in overcrowded hotspots before transfer to facilities that often restrict their freedom. Italy now hosts over 21,700 unaccompanied minors — a steep jump from 17,700 last year.

UNICEF Sounds Alarm on Children’s Deaths at Sea

“The Mediterranean Sea has become a cemetery for children and their futures,” said Regina De Dominicis, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia. “These tragic losses are the result of broken migration policies.”

With exploitation and abuse rampant, especially among girls and sub-Saharan African children, experts warn urgent action is needed to stop this ongoing tragedy.
