Tim Peake Steps Down as ESA Astronaut, Becomes Space Ambassador

The UK Space Agency has saluted Tim Peake after he announced his exit from the active European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut squad. Tim’s new gig? Space ambassador, inspiring the next generation.

Championing STEM with Star Power

In his fresh role, Tim will team up with the UK Space Agency and ESA, using his space adventures to fuel young people’s passion for science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

“Tim Peake is an incredible ambassador for the UK space sector and has played a leading role over the last decade,” said Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency.

From groundbreaking science on his Principia mission to motivating millions with his enthusiasm, Tim has spotlighted the vast careers behind space missions — from scientists and engineers to lawyers and designers. Thanks to him, the UK space sector is primed to rocket to new heights.

Legends Pass the Baton

“We wish Tim the best of luck and look forward to supporting him on his next adventure,” said the UK Space Agency. The future of British human spaceflight now rests with rising stars like Rosemary Coogan, Meganne Christian, and John McFall — the world’s first astronaut with a physical disability.

“Being an ESA astronaut has been the most extraordinary experience,” Tim reflected. “After thirteen years, I’m honoured to have worked with such a dedicated team. As a human spaceflight ambassador, I’ll continue promoting educational outreach and look forward to new opportunities ahead.”

From Chichester to the Stars

Born in Chichester in 1972, Tim was picked as an ESA astronaut in 2009, becoming Britain’s second astronaut after Helen Sharman. His 2015 Principia mission made him the first Brit to visit the International Space Station (ISS).

On the ISS, Tim completed a spacewalk sporting a Union Jack, repaired crucial equipment, controlled a rover in Stevenage’s Mars Yard, helped dock spacecraft, ran the London marathon on a treadmill, and took part in key scientific experiments.

After landing in 2016, he engaged over two million schoolchildren across the UK – roughly one in every three schools – through more than 30 space projects.

A Shining Star for Space Education

Since then, Tim has held several key ESA roles, including Head of Astronaut Operations. He’s become a beacon for children worldwide, championing STEM and showing the life-changing potential of space careers.

“Tim has been a role model for kids, young professionals, and aspiring astronauts, inspiring millions while representing ESA’s values and ambition,” said ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher.

UKspace Chair John Hanley added, “Tim has raised public awareness of space technology’s value and inspired countless people through his dedication to STEM education. We wish him all the best as he continues his ambassadorial work.”

Next-Gen British Astronauts Take Off

At the ESA Council of Ministers in Paris, November 2022, the latest astronaut line-up was announced. Joining the ranks are Rosemary Coogan, John McFall, and Meganne Christian — Britain’s new faces in space exploration.
