Husband to Face Life for Wife’s Brutal Murder in East London
Aminan Rahman, 46, has been found guilty of murdering his 24-year-old wife, Suma Begum. Her decomposed body was found stuffed in a suitcase on a Thamesmead riverbank. Rahman strangled Begum in their east London flat last April, an attack witnessed by her two young children and captured on a shocking video call by her online boyfriend in the UAE.
Chilling Video Call and CCTV Evidence Seal Rahman’s Fate
After the killing, Rahman stuffed Suma’s body into a suitcase and was caught on CCTV dumping it into the River Lea. The suitcase drifted downstream before a mudlark discovered it 10 days later in Thamesmead.
Shahin Miah, Suma’s online boyfriend, gave harrowing testimony. He was on the call from the UAE when Rahman threatened to kill her, then showed Suma’s lifeless body, warning Miah to “get ready.”
Marriage Torn Apart by Jealousy and Online Affair
Suma and Rahman’s marriage began in 2019 via an arranged Islamic ceremony over the phone. They settled in Somerset and had two children. But cracks appeared when Suma started an online relationship with Miah, whom she met on TikTok and contacted through WhatsApp.
Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC described the build-up to the murder:
“It is clear this young woman was no longer happy in her marriage, she was fairly openly in a relationship with another man, and she had expressed the desire to leave the defendant.”
Rahman’s Defence Fails Against Overwhelming Evidence
Rahman claimed he acted in defence of their child, alleging Suma had threatened the child. Prosecutors shredded this, pointing to his cold, calculated actions and attempts to cover up the crime.
The jury took just over four hours to convict Rahman of murder, assault by beating, and preventing a lawful burial. Sentencing is set for July 31.
Police Praise Relentless Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen praised the meticulous police work:
“This case shows that Met detectives will leave no stone unturned to build a strong case against domestic violence offenders. We analysed hundreds of hours of CCTV and recovered the full video call proving Rahman killed Suma in a jealous rage.”
Suma Begum’s tragic death highlights the dangers of domestic abuse and the urgent need for support for victims trying to escape violent relationships.
