Hooded Killer Jailed for Brutal Murder of Mum in Her Pyjamas
A grainy CCTV snap of a hooded man lurking outside a quiet home cracked the case of mum-of-three Clair Ablewhite’s savage murder. Police found Clair, 47, dead in her pyjamas at her Colston Bassett home on 26 February, stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest.
Blood-Stained Shoe Prints and Missing Phone
Forensics uncovered chilling clues: bloodied shoe prints inside the house, but no DNA from the attacker. Clair’s mobile phone and the murder weapon were nowhere to be found. The remote location meant CCTV and witnesses were scarce, leaving detectives racing against time.
Detectives Hunt for Clues in Clair’s Past
Detective Inspector Mel Crutchley led the intensive investigation. “Understanding Clair’s background was key,” she said. Police interviewed over 20 people connected to Clair, who had only lived at the address for six weeks.
“There was no sign of burglary. The wounds suggested a very personal attack.” Cam footage and bus routes yielded no new leads until a media appeal begged for public help.
Neighbour’s Tip Leads Police to Killer
A neighbour recognized the man in the CCTV – 26-year-old John Jessop from Newark. Jessop had an on-off intimate relationship with Clair since September 2021. But he hadn’t come forward to police.
Jessop was arrested, charged, and pleaded guilty to Clair’s murder at Nottingham Crown Court on October 12. On 4 January, he was sentenced to 20 years, serving at least 17 years and eight months behind bars.
DI Crutchley Praises Determined Investigation
“This was a solid investigation, with officers working around the clock. The CCTV was crucial in tracing Jessop’s route from Newark to Colston Bassett,” said DI Crutchley.
“The neighbour’s help was invaluable. He even flew back from France to assist the investigation. I want to thank him personally for helping bring Clair’s killer to justice.”
“Jessop showed no remorse—he gave no comment and offered no apology. While Clair’s dad desperately tried CPR, Jessop was in a pub, casually drinking with mates.”
“Clair was a loving mum, daughter, sister, and friend. Nothing can bring her back, but Jessop will now spend a long time behind bars. I hope her family finds some comfort in that.”
