ICC Goes After Top Russian Generals Over Ukraine War Crimes
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ramped up its war crimes probe in Ukraine by issuing arrest warrants for two senior Russian officials. Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s ex-defense minister, and General Valery Gerasimov, military chief of staff, are now in the dock.
What Are They Accused Of?
The ICC charges Shoigu and Gerasimov with war crimes and crimes against humanity. The key allegation? Ordering missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian electric infrastructure between October 2022 and March 2023.
- These attacks caused widespread damage to power networks.
- They endangered countless civilian lives.
- The strikes targeted critical infrastructure, escalating the conflict’s human cost.
International Arrest Orders
With 123 member states behind the ICC, these countries must arrest Shoigu and Gerasimov if they enter their territories. Both men could then be extradited to The Hague to face trial.
This bold move sends a sharp message: targeting civilians and essential services won’t be tolerated.
Putin Also Under ICC’s Gun
Back in March 2023, the ICC already slapped an arrest warrant on Russian President Vladimir Putin. He’s accused of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children and forcibly transferring Ukrainians to Russia.
Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, faces a separate warrant over similar charges.
The ICC is dead serious about holding top Kremlin figures accountable amid the Ukraine war chaos. Watch this space for more fallout.
