UK to Take in 3,000 Vulnerable Syrian Child Refugees
Island MP Andrew Turner has backed the Government’s bold move to resettle 3,000 vulnerable child refugees displaced by the Syrian war. The UK will team up with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to find the most at-risk children — and their carers where needed — for safe passage to Britain.
Commons Reject Extra 3,000 Refugees Already in Europe
The pledge comes after MPs voted down an amendment to accept another 3,000 unaccompanied refugee children already on European soil. This latest decision does not affect children who have family in the UK. Those youngsters can still join relatives under the Dublin Convention by claiming asylum.
Turner Puts UK’s Support into Perspective
“Our Government has provided more financial support to those fleeing war-torn Syria than all other EU countries put together,” said Mr Turner. “We’re helping frontline EU nations manage the immigration crisis and funding refugee camps in safer parts of Europe.”
He added: “We can’t offer a home to everyone in the world who wants to come here, but as a wealthy nation, we’re stepping up for those in desperate need.”
