Labour MP Tulip Siddiq slapped with 2-year jail term in Bangladesh corruption shock
Family Feud Sparks Prison Sentences for Bangladesh’s Political Elite
Tulip Siddiq, MP for Hampstead and Highgate, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Bangladeshi court – and she wasn’t even there. The verdict came after Siddiq was found guilty of using her political clout to help her family grab a government land plot.
The turmoil drags in her famous family too. Siddiq is the niece of ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who scored a five-year sentence for abuse of power. Siddiq’s mother, Sheikh Rehana, was handed seven years behind bars.
It gets darker. Hasina was recently sentenced to death over a violent crackdown that ended her 15-year rule. She fled to India and remains in exile. All these trials happened without the accused present.
Siddiq Denounces Trial as Political Hit Job
Siddiq, tried in absentia, slammed the proceedings as nonsense and politically motivated. She called the charges “completely absurd” and insisted she’s just “collateral damage” in a bitter feud between her aunt and Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus.
“The charges are completely absurd — I am collateral damage,” Siddiq told The Guardian.
UK Stands Firm: No Extradition and Political Consequences
- The UK has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh, so Siddiq remains free on home soil – for now.
- Earlier this year, she quit her Treasury role amid pressure over family connections.
- She faced probes over London properties linked to Hasina’s allies but was cleared of breaching rules.
- Still, ethics advisors urged Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to rethink Siddiq’s role, leading to her resignation from government posts.
Ongoing Legal Storm Clouds Family’s Future
Tulip Siddiq and her family remain overseas while courts continue to investigate multiple cases about the disputed land deal. The drama isn’t done – Hasina’s son and daughter have also been given jail sentences in related trials.
