£22 Million Pension Fraud: Two Men Jailed for Stunning Scam
Two men have been locked up for six years each after pulling off a £22 million pension fraud. Rikki Nicholls, 57, from Bromsgrove, and Mark Kelly, 51, from Cheshire, duped over 250 pension holders into transferring their savings into dodgy Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs), lining their own pockets while victims faced financial ruin.
Cold Calls and Crooked Commissions
The pair set up a sham firm called ‘PCD Wealth & Pension Management’ in 2007, cold-calling Equitable Life customers and convincing them to move their pensions to risky investments. They used unqualified agents to handle paperwork, often leaving forms incomplete so they could sneak in hefty fees later. Worse still, they redirected victims’ correspondence to PO Boxes they controlled, keeping clients in the dark.
“Both men put their own financial gain before over 250 victims, who ended up losing between £10,000 and £200,000 each,” said Detective Superintendent John Roch, Head of the Met’s Economic Crime team. “Many victims are now struggling financially, forced to keep working or face retirement with slashed or no pensions at all.”
Investigation and Court Drama
- Police launched their probe after the Financial Services Authority flagged suspicious activity in 2011.
- Detectives reviewed over 10,000 documents and spoke to hundreds of victims nationwide.
- Kelly was arrested in April 2014; Nicholls voluntarily returned from Dubai a month later.
- Charges of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering were finally brought in July 2020.
- Both pleaded not guilty but were convicted in April 2022 after a five-month trial at Southwark Crown Court.
- Sentenced on 15 July 2022, each received six years behind bars.
Victims Speak Out: “I Trusted the Wrong People”
When I first realised my pension was plunging and locked away, I was furious at myself for trusting rotten advisors who took huge commissions,” said Denis Mountford, a Birmingham victim. “This case should warn others about dodgy financial advice.”
Detective Superintendent Roch praised the victims and the dedicated officers who cracked the case. “Thanks to their bravery and hard work, justice has been served. We urge the public to be extremely cautious about cold calls and always seek independent financial advice.”
