Met Police Crack Spy Ring Linked to Russia
The Metropolitan Police have charged a sixth suspect in their wide-ranging investigation into alleged spying for the Russian state. Tihomir Ivanov Ivanchev, 38, from Acton, west London, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on February 28.
Serious Charges Over State Security
The Bulgarian national faces conspiracy charges under the Criminal Law Act 1977, accused of gathering information useful to an enemy, threatening UK national security. His arrest came on February 7 as part of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command’s ongoing probe.
More Arrests and a Growing Case
- Five others were charged in September 2023 for similar offences and are currently held awaiting an October 2024 trial.
- Investigations revealed they conspired from August 2020 to February 2023 with others unknown to authorities.
Met Commander Issues Warning
Commander Dominic Murphy confirmed the latest arrest, praising the CPS for securing the charge. He urged the public to avoid publishing anything that might jeopardise the trial, reminding everyone of Ivanchev’s right to a fair hearing.
“A sixth suspect was identified and arrested following previous arrests. A charge has now been brought,” said Commander Murphy.
The Met continues to tighten the net on suspected Russian espionage in the heart of London.
