Big Haul in People Smuggling Crackdown
Early this morning, police swooped on a criminal gang using lorries to smuggle migrants into the UK. A 39-year-old man, believed to be the ringleader, was arrested in Dagenham on conspiracy charges related to illegal immigration.
Three other men were nabbed at homes in Ilford, Leytonstone, and Streatham, all suspected of helping the gang.
How the Smugglers Operated
The arrests link back to two chilling incidents in 2019 where 32 migrants were found hidden inside HGVs in the Netherlands and France. Investigators say the gang tampered with lorries, allowing migrants to be stowed away without the drivers’ knowledge.
To keep tabs on the loot, the gang installed tracking devices on the vehicles, monitoring their journey to the UK.
Agency Cracks Down on Ruthless People Smugglers
“Organised immigration crime is a persistent and dangerous threat,” said Andy Noyes, NCA branch commander. “Smugglers have no regard for those they transport, whether by boat or vehicle. Though hiding migrants in lorries may be less visible, it’s no less deadly, as we’ve seen from tragic past cases.”
Noyes added, “We’re determined to disrupt and dismantle these organised crime groups and destroy their business models, working closely with partners both here and abroad.”
Part of a Wider UK-EU Crackdown
This marks the NCA’s second major operation in a week targeting people smugglers. Across Europe, officers joined forces in raids against a network believed to have trafficked thousands to the UK via small boats.
Some 40 suspects were arrested in what’s hailed as the largest crackdown of its kind.
