TikTok Tops News Sources for UK Teens

TikTok has overtaken all rivals as the go-to news source for UK teenagers. According to a fresh Ofcom study, 28% of 12 to 15-year-olds get their news from the short-video app. It edges out YouTube and Instagram, both at 25%, in keeping young Brits up to speed.

Digital News Beat Traditional Media

The Ofcom report highlights a major shift in how news is consumed. A whopping 68% of UK adults now rely on online sources, while only 26% still pick up physical newspapers. TV remains king, with 70% tuning in for news and that jumps to 75% when including on-demand viewing.

But it’s TikTok’s rise among the younger crowd that flags a changing media landscape.

TikTok’s Serious News Moment

“TikTok was once seen as mainly for light content, but COVID-19 changed that,” says Nic Newman from the Reuters Institute. “People stuck at home turned to TikTok for serious news discussions, reshaping news habits among young audiences.”

Still, 45% of young teens admit they aren’t keen on news—half find it “too boring” while 16% say it’s “too upsetting.” Sports news is the top interest among 12 to 15-year-olds (23%), followed by music stars (15%) and celebrities (11%).

Social Media Shifts: Facebook Falls, TikTok Soars

Facebook, once dominant for news, has slipped to 30% adult usage from 35% in 2019. TikTok, meanwhile, jumped from just 1% in 2020 to 10% now.

Despite TikTok’s growing influence, it faces scrutiny over alleged ties to China. This led to bans on official devices in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the EU. TikTok’s parent company ByteDance denies data-sharing claims.

Among 16 to 24-year-olds, Instagram leads for news at 44%, TikTok follows at 29%, and just 10% say they never consume news—double the small 5% seen in the wider adult population.

The study, based on interviews with over 1,000 young people, clearly signals a new era in news consumption. And TikTok is leading the charge.
