Sunak Pumps Up Cash to Boost China Know-How in UK Government

Big Money for China Skills

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is cranking up funding to sharpen the UK government’s expertise on China. This fresh cash boost targets economic and military policy knowledge, plus Mandarin language skills.

The extra funding backs the cross-department China Capabilities Programme, aimed at training government staff to better understand China’s complex landscape.

Mandarin Training on the Rise

Since the 2021 Integrated Review, more than 170 civil servants have been trained in Mandarin. The government is clearly focusing on building up China expertise right across Whitehall.

Foreign Secretary Speaks Out

“It’s vital that our diplomats and civil servants have the understanding and expertise to engage and adapt to the increasing challenge posed by China, and China’s growing role in world affairs,” said Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

“This extra resource will help boost knowledge and language skills across government, in the face of the systemic challenge that China poses to the UK’s security, prosperity, and values.”

Why the Push?

The government’s refreshed Integrated Review, launched on Monday 13 March, highlights growing UK concerns over China’s military and diplomatic moves—including its actions around Taiwan, political coercion, and even sanctioning British MPs.

With China turning more authoritarian domestically and assertive globally, this funding hike underscores the UK’s determination to stay ahead, engage strategically, and protect national security.
