Britain Powers Ahead with £205 Million Boost for Home-Grown Green Energy

Britain’s green energy revolution is accelerating fast. The UK government just dropped a whopping £205 million in its latest renewables auction. This bold move means more clean, affordable, and home-grown energy, supercharging our energy security and fuelling economic growth across the nation.

Huge Push for Low-Carbon Power with Contracts for Difference

The Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, the government’s flagship tool for backing British low-carbon power projects, has already locked in nearly 27GW of clean capacity. Last round alone secured 11GW—enough to light up 12 million homes. Now, with £205 million ready to roll in the fifth round, and for the first time running annually, green industries and jobs are set to thrive like never before.

Major Investment in Offshore Wind and Tidal Power

  • £170 million targeted at trusted tech like offshore wind keeps Britain a world leader.
  • £10 million ring-fenced to boost tidal stream technology, sparking a fresh tidal power boom.

These investments will replace pricey fossil fuels with cheaper, cleaner, British-sourced energy, creating thousands of green jobs and leveling up communities nationwide. Since late 2020, private investment has poured in—supporting 68,000 green jobs and billions in economic growth.

Government Eyes Europe’s Cheapest Electricity Prices

The CfD scheme’s competitive auctions have driven prices down since day one. With solar and wind already among the UK’s cheapest power sources, the government is confident it can slash wholesale electricity prices to rank among Europe’s best deals.

Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero Graham Stuart said:

“Our flagship Contracts for Difference scheme is already delivering clean, homegrown energy as well as growing a green economy with green jobs.”

“Today’s budget announcement, the move to annual auctions and continued investment in renewable energy will limit the impact of events like Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine and drive our overriding priority for the UK to have amongst the cheapest wholesale electricity prices in Europe.”

“I am excited to see the opportunities that will open for Britain’s world-class renewable industries as annual auctions kick off this year, enhancing the UK’s reputation as among the most attractive places to invest in for a secure, affordable and prosperous future.”

Clean Energy Spreading Across UK Nations

The CfD scheme has funded 52 projects in Scotland—about 30% of all funded projects and 25% of total capacity—and 9 projects in Wales, adding roughly 260MW of clean power. The scheme’s design ensures fairness: when market prices leap above agreed contract prices, generators repay the difference, which should lead to lower energy bills for British households over time.

Offshore Wind: Britain’s Crown Jewel of Clean Energy

Offshore wind sits at the heart of CfD success. The UK boasts Europe’s largest operational fleet, the world’s four biggest wind farms, and an ambitious target of 50GW capacity by 2030—including 5GW of floating offshore wind. According to the British Energy Security Strategy, offshore wind will generate enough power to light every British home by 2030. It also supports 90,000 jobs and attracts crucial investment in coastal communities.

State-Backed Power Moves and £20 Billion Carbon Capture Boost

Energy ambitions don’t stop there. Yesterday’s Spring Budget unveiled a £20 billion injection into carbon capture technology. Plus, the government greenlit its first nuclear power project in nearly 40 years at Sizewell C, while progressing Great British Nuclear’s drive to revolutionise UK nuclear energy.

Neil McDermott, CEO of Low Carbon Contracts Company, said:

“We welcome the announcement from the government on CfD Allocation Round 5. We look forward to working with investors and generators for these important projects as we continue the journey to Net Zero.”
