Wimbledon Won’t Comment After Azarenka Booed Off Court
The All England Club has slammed the door on any statement following Belarusian star Victoria Azarenka’s controversial exit from Wimbledon. Azarenka was booed by parts of the crowd after losing a nail-biting three-set clash with Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on Sunday.
Politics Overshadow Thrilling Tennis Drama
Svitolina’s win on Court One sets her up against world number one Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals. But the match was marred by political tension. True to form, Svitolina refused to shake Azarenka’s hand, protesting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Belarus, Azarenka’s homeland, stands firmly alongside Moscow in the conflict.
When Azarenka raised her hand to offer respect, she was met with a chorus of boos. The two-time Australian Open champion called the reaction “unfair” and insisted the focus should be on tennis, not handshakes or a “quite drunk” crowd.
Wimbledon Chief Says No to Forcing Handshakes
Svitolina and other Ukrainian players have previously snubbed Russian and Belarusian opponents at the French Open. She has urged tennis authorities to clarify protocols and educate fans on the sensitive situation.
But All England Club CEO Sally Bolton said Wimbledon will not be issuing a statement. She stressed that how players behave after matches is their personal choice. Bolton praised the Wimbledon crowd as savvy and capable of understanding the complex backdrop.
“We want the focus to stay on the incredible tennis on show,” Bolton added, admitting it’s tough to control every fan’s reaction.
Russian and Belarusian Players Return Amid Lingering Tensions
This year could see up to five players from Russia or Belarus competing at Wimbledon, a major shift after last year’s ban. When asked about the possibility of a player from these nations lifting the trophy, Bolton reassured the public that the club carefully weighed its decision and feels confident moving forward.
