Woman dies trying to cross Channel as migrant numbers hit 50,000 since Labour took power
Tragedy on the French coast
A woman in her 30s died trying to board a small boat bound for the UK. The heartbreaking incident happened Monday evening on Malo Beach in Dunkirk, according to French NGO Utopia 56, which helps displaced migrants at the French border.
French police and emergency services desperately tried to resuscitate her three times but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Migrant crossings soar under Labour
Official Home Office figures reveal 474 migrants crossed the Channel by small boat on Monday alone. Since Labour’s general election win in July 2024, a staggering 50,271 people have made the dangerous journey.
So far in 2025, Channel crossings have reached 27,029 – a 47% increase from this time last year and a 67% jump compared to 2023.
Government’s “one in, one out” plan faces test
In response, the UK government introduced a controversial “one in, one out” returns deal. Under this plan, migrants arriving by small boat can be sent back to France within days. Meanwhile, approved asylum seekers in France are relocated to the UK via safe and legal routes.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the woman’s tragic death amid mounting pressure to tackle the Channel crossing crisis.
