Vehicles Left Trapped Under Scaffolding After Shocking Hindhead Collision
Chaos erupted on the A287 in Hindhead, Surrey, after a serious crash left at least two vehicles trapped beneath precarious scaffolding on Thursday, April 21. Emergency crews feared the scaffolding could collapse if the trapped vehicles were moved.
Four-Vehicle Smash Sends Cars Crashing Into Scaffolding
The accident involved four vehicles, including a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). Two cars collided head-on before careering into scaffolding supporting a nearby building. Several supporting beams were badly bent, with only a few holding up the heavy frame and the vehicles.
Heroic Witnesses Rush To Help
Simon Hickey, a Virgin Atlantic first officer who was third in line behind the HGV, described the frightening scene. “A car came around the corner, clipped the back of the lorry, and hit another car,” he said. “The car in front of me reversed, so I reversed too. Then two cars went under the scaffolding and into the side of the building.”
One person has been rushed to hospital. Simon leapt into action to help the driver of a Subaru, an elderly man in his 70s. “He had his foot flat on the accelerator, and the front wheels were smoking. I reached in and turned off the engine,” Simon explained.
Shock and Chest Pains, But No Serious Injury
The Subaru driver wasn’t injured or trapped but was in deep shock. “I think he had some chest pains which I suspect were caused by the airbags,” Simon added.
Emergency services remain on alert as they work to safely remove the vehicles and assess the damaged scaffolding.
