Man Jailed for Hit-and-Run That Killed Teen Moped Rider

A 23-year-old man has been locked up for a year after a tragic hit-and-run crash in North Finchley left an 18-year-old moped rider dead.

Tragic Crash on North Finchley Road

Ali Bahramzadeh, from Clifton Gardens, NW11, was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, 11 January. He admitted causing death by careless driving, driving uninsured, and failing to stop after the collision. Along with the jail term, he was banned from driving for two and a half years.

On 17 November 2016, Bahramzadeh took his mother’s Nissan Pixo without permission. He was driving with several passengers along Ashurst Road, heading towards a mini roundabout. At the same time, Alfie O’Keefe-Hedges, 18, from Hatfield, was riding his moped along Buxted Road towards the same roundabout.

Hit and Run Leaves Teen Critically Injured

Bahramzadeh’s car failed to stop at the roundabout and collided with Alfie, who was thrown over the vehicle. Instead of helping, Bahramzadeh and his passengers fled the scene. Ambulance crews treated Alfie’s serious head injury before rushing him to an east London hospital. Sadly, he died eight days later, on 25 November 2016.

A post-mortem confirmed head injuries as the cause of death. That very same night, Bahramzadeh turned himself in at a North London police station, admitting he’d hit a moped. He was arrested and formally charged in May 2017. The other occupants of the car remain unidentified despite police efforts.

Police Speak Out After Sentence

“We can only hope this sentence brings some small comfort to Alfie’s family, who have been devastated by his loss following Bahramzadeh’s actions,” said Detective Constable Rob Simpson from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “It will hopefully be a reminder to all drivers to pay proper care and attention to avoid needless tragedies like this.”
