Ex-Ryde Teacher Jailed for Child Sex Offences

Eric Wright, 39, a former school teacher from Wellington Road, Binstead, has been locked up for 14 months after arranging sexual offences against a child. The ‘potentially dangerous’ offender was snared in a South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) sting last September.

Caught Red-Handed at Work

Wright was arrested while on the job in Ryde. At Isle of Wight Crown Court in Newport on Monday (22 January), he admitted to one count of arranging a child sex offence. This earned him a 14-month sentence.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual communication with a child. For these, he received six months each, running concurrently.

Long-Term Restrictions for Rugby-Loving Offender

To protect the community upon release, Wright – a keen rugby player – has been slapped with a 21-year sexual harm prevention order. The terms ensure he’s kept under tight watch for decades.

Police Cracking Down on Child Exploitation

Detective Inspector Mike Hall, leading the investigation for SEROCU, said: “Protecting children from exploitation is one of the most important missions we, the police, have. This is an example of the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit using the full range of our capabilities to catch sexual predators before they act.”

“Working closely with Hampshire Constabulary, we’ve brought a dangerous offender to justice and kept children safe. If anyone has been a victim of child sexual abuse, I urge you to report it by calling 101. We take all allegations seriously, no matter when they happened.”

Victims are encouraged to speak confidentially with experienced officers and access support services.

Note: Wright was employed as a teacher in Ryde, but the school’s name remains confidential due to reporting restrictions.
