Allotment thieves hit Isle of Wight – locals fear pro crooks behind raids

Allotment holders on the Isle of Wight are on edge after a wave of thefts, with fears that professional thieves are to blame. Over the weekend, the Pan Estate saw at least two sheds broken into and prized produce such as carrots and runner beans stolen.

Organised crooks targeting allotments

More allotment holders have recently fallen victim, losing not just vegetables but also tools. One pensioner, who asked to remain anonymous, suspects the raids are carried out by gangs due to the “sophisticated nature” of the thefts.

“They stole my tools by taking the door off its hinges. I’ve reported it to the police and urge other victims to do the same,” said the pensioner. “Don’t leave anything valuable lying around for thieves.”

Thieves clever enough to cover their tracks

Duncan Knifton, another victim whose father also suffered losses, expressed his frustration: “This isn’t the first time. My dad spends hours growing crops, not for strangers to nick them.”

Crooked thieves even replaced carrot tops so it looked like the crop was untouched, making detection harder.

Police boost patrols, urge vigilance

The local neighbourhood officer from Hampshire Constabulary revealed plans to up patrols and leafleting nearby households to raise awareness.

“People take pride in their allotments and come to relax. We advise not leaving valuables unattended and using door alarms,” said the officer. “We’ll increase visibility to deter these thieves.”

An Isle of Wight Council spokesman added: “Be vigilant, report suspicious behaviour to police, and keep tools locked away or taken home. Common sense goes a long way.”
