Epsom Man Guilty of Murdering Ex-Partner in Cold Blood
A 41-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering his ex-partner in broad daylight in Epsom. Ricardo Godinho, from Kingston Road, was convicted today (Wednesday, 17 July) at Guildford Crown Court following a two-and-a-half-week trial.
Stabbing Shock at Ewell Bus Stop
Aliny Mendes, 39, was stabbed multiple times at the Sparrow Farm Road junction in Ewell on Friday, 8 February. She died by the roadside shortly after police were called to the scene. Reports say the attack happened as she stepped off a bus.
Police quickly launched a manhunt after one of Godinho’s work colleagues contacted 999, revealing Godinho had confessed to the murder. He was arrested just 90 minutes later in Cheam, wearing clothes witnesses identified from the scene.
Cold, Calculated Killer
The court heard the couple had been married but separated in December 2018. Godinho’s behaviour became “increasingly intimidating” leading up to the killing.
On the tragic day, Aliny was travelling with their three-year-old daughter. Godinho waited in his car, followed the bus, then confronted and stabbed her multiple times before fleeing.
Forensics linked Godinho to the murder weapon, a knife found at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed Aliny died from multiple stab wounds caused by that knife.
“Aliny was a beautiful, intelligent, happy, caring woman loved by many in the UK and Brazil,” said her family. “She was a loving mother to four young children under 12, who now face life without her. The smallest moments—school plays, birthdays, even when the children are unwell—will never be the same without her.”
Justice for Aliny, Warning for Others
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Mark Chapman expressed sympathy for the family. “This attack in broad daylight has devastated many. Aliny’s priority was her children, and we will continue supporting the family.”
Claire Gallagher from the CPS slammed Godinho’s claim he lost control in a row. “Witnesses describe him as cold and calm. He had a large knife with him, proving premeditation. Evidence from his devices showed anger and resentment towards his wife seeking a new life.”
Godinho pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder. The court rejected this, finding overwhelming evidence he planned the attack.
