Violence Suppression Unit Cracks Down in Tower Hamlets
Five men have been arrested following a violent stabbing in Tower Hamlets, thanks to a major swoop by the Met’s Violence Suppression Unit (VSU). The arrests came after targeted raids at three addresses on Warley Street and Hannibal Road in the early hours of Monday, 11 May.
Weapons Seized in Early Morning Raids
The suspects, held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, and ammunition possession, were caught after a joint operation between the VSU and CID Reactive and Proactive teams. Officers also seized dangerous weapons, including large ‘Rambo’-style knives and suspected ammunition, now undergoing forensic analysis.
Attack Near Stepney Green Tube
The arrests follow a chilling attack just after 10.50pm on Sunday, 5 April at Stepney Green underground station. A 19-year-old man was stabbed but thankfully his injuries were not life-threatening. An 18-year-old was arrested and charged with GBH with intent and carrying an offensive weapon. He remains in custody awaiting trial.
Met Steps Up Fight Against Violence
A/Inspector Sam Horton said: “This is the exact work that Central East Violence Suppression Unit is carrying out daily to combat violent crime. Residents can rest assured we are working 24/7 to target and remove the most violent offenders from our streets.”
As lockdown restrictions ease, the Met is boosting its efforts against street violence with over 620 officers dedicated to new Violence Suppression Units across London. They are targeting around 1,000 of the capital’s most violent offenders and focusing on 250 “micro hotspots” prone to violence and robbery.
These units are using innovative tactics, including surprise police blitzes, to drive criminals off the streets and safeguard communities.
