Husband Jailed for Brutal Attempted Murder of Wife in Twickenham
A man has been found guilty of attempted murder following a savage attack on his wife in their Twickenham home. After an eight-day trial, William Clapperton was convicted on Tuesday, 15 December. He is due for sentencing on 22 January 2021.
Alcohol-Fuelled Rage Sparks Hour-Long Knife Assault
In the early hours of 17 February, Clapperton launched a sustained and frenzied attack on his wife after she revealed she wanted to end their marriage. In a violent rage, he shredded her clothes before viciously assaulting her with scissors, a chopping knife, and his bare hands.
The victim pleaded for him to stop, but Clapperton ignored her cries. He inflicted severe injuries to her face, neck, and body, repeatedly telling her she was “ugly” and “going to die.” She also suffered cuts defending herself.
Images of her injuries were deemed too horrific for the courtroom. Even nine months later, she continues to undergo extensive surgery.
Victim’s Heartbreaking Statement
“I am not the same anymore and will face surgery for the foreseeable future,” said the woman in her 40s.
“I provided for both of us for years and I still can’t believe the man I loved for 14 years did this. The scars serve as a daily reminder of the nightmare that destroyed my life.
“I want to thank the kind stranger who helped me, the emergency services, medical staff at St Mary’s Hospital, and the police officers who supported me.
“I share my story so others know this is real and can get help.”
Escape and Arrest
At around 7.15am, the victim seized a chance to flee, running barefoot into the street where a passer-by called an ambulance. Police arrived within minutes and arrested Clapperton at 9.31am after forcing entry into the property alongside the Territorial Support Group.
Clapperton was found with self-inflicted knife wounds to his chest and wrist and was hospitalised before being charged with attempted murder, false imprisonment, and criminal damage.
Detective’s Warning and Call for Action
Detective Constable David Payne said: “This was a sickening, unprovoked, and vicious attack. Only luck saved the victim’s life.
“Despite overwhelming evidence, Clapperton has shown no remorse. He now faces years in prison to reflect on his monstrous actions.
“I commend the victim’s bravery and urge anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to call the police. Your call could save a life.”
