Man Slapped with £10k Fine for Huge Illegal Gathering

A 23-year-old man has been fined a whopping £10,000 after organising a massive illegal gathering of over 400 people. The event, held near Shirebrook Leisure Centre, was meant to honour a friend who tragically died in a crash on the M1.

Hundreds Defy Rules for Emotional Tribute

The crowd packed the area on Monday 5 April around 8pm, lighting up the night with large fireworks displays. The noisy event sparked dozens of calls to police from local residents.

Police Crack Down, Enforce Covid Rules

Officers arrived and quickly dispersed the group. Using videos shared on social media, cops identified the man behind the event and handed him the £10,000 penalty under coronavirus laws.

Chief Superintendent Hayley Barnett said: “Over the last year, thousands of people have lost loved ones and have been unable to grieve in the way they would normally be able to. We understand how hard this is and my heart goes out to all those who find themselves unable to say goodbye.

“However, Covid-19 still remains a very real risk to public health with restrictions on certain gatherings still in place and we will continue to use enforcement measures where necessary to protect the public.”
